What Are Dental Crowns?

A crown is used to cover a damaged tooth. A crown is often made of porcelain or ceramic because these materials are strong and look like your natural, healthy teeth.

We recommend crowns for a variety of reasons, but their main function is to protect a damaged tooth. It can cover a tooth that has fractured, or it can prevent a weak tooth from fracturing. Crowns are commonly used to protect a tooth that has undergone a root canal procedure to prevent fractures and so that bacteria can’t get inside and do further damage.

In some cases, we will use crowns when replacing missing teeth. In these cases, crowns can be attached to dental implants. We can also install crowns on healthy teeth that are used as anchors for a dental bridge.

What Are Dental Bridges?

While crowns are used to cover and protect damaged teeth, bridges are meant to replace the teeth that have been lost. They “bridge” the gap between your existing teeth. We anchor the bridge onto the teeth on either side. With a bridge, you will be able to chew your food properly and restore the quality of your smile.

Like crowns, bridges are also often made of ceramic or porcelain. We design the bridge to make it look and function like natural teeth. No one will notice that you’re wearing replacement teeth.
