Dental cleanings or prophylaxis is an oral hygiene procedure that involves the removal of plaque or the sticky deposits on teeth in which bacteria grow. Its purpose is to avert cavities, tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. It also makes the teeth’s surface clean and smooth so that bacteria won’t stick to them. Halitosis or bad breath can also be treated with regular dental cleanings.
Even with regular brushing and flossing, there are areas in the mouth that are difficult to reach. This results in hard, calcified deposits that accumulate over time, and if not removed, cause tooth decay. Here at Image Dental, we strongly urge our patients to have regular dental cleanings at least twice a year.
When cleaning your teeth, our hygienist will loosen up any large, calcified deposits in and around your teeth using an ultrasonic vibrating instrument. She will also remove the debris attached to gum pockets and clean the gum lines. After removing the larger pieces of tartar, the hygienist will proceed to the removal of any smaller debris using specialized dental hand tools. Following the cleaning, each tooth will be polished leaving your teeth with a clean, bright appearance.
A beautiful smile starts with healthy and clean teeth and gums. Call us for an appointment at (708) 863-2000 if you need a dental cleaning or other dental services.
